[K-FOOD/REVIEW] SYNC opens First Korean Tapas Bar in Singapore

NIC_9231

Craving for some Korean finger food? If you are, do check out Singapore’s first-ever Korean tapas bar, one of SYNC’s newest additions that is nestled in the heart of Serangoon Gardens. Previously, we paid a visit to SYNC Korean Fusion Bistro located at Westgate and did a review on our site. This time, we visited the Tapas Bar and would like to introduce more variety of Korean Tapas and food.

What’s different from the Bistro at Westgate was not only the menu but also the entire restaurant atmosphere. We felt really welcomed as we stepped into the restaurant – it’s like one of those trendy cafés in your neighbourhood with a friendly atmosphere. They have an open-kitchen concept in this restaurant too.

Something to look forward at SYNC Korean Tapas Bar are the Korean inspired cocktails and soju shots. We were served the Soju Mojito (soju w/ mint leaves) which is under one of the recommended choices in the menu.

For those who want to give a try at Soju, or if you’ve always wondered how Soju tasted like, you should try the Soju Peach Shot which goes down pretty well with desserts. The peach complements with the liquor, so the alcohol taste isn’t that strong. From $7.90, you get to enjoy a variety of cocktails and special soju shots at the Tapas Bar!

Some of the Tapas we tasted were the Crackling 해물과자 (Umani cod chips) which is especially tasty though a bit oily, the Cheese Tteokbokki 떡볶이, DakKangJung 닭강정 (Korean crispy chicken with sweet & spicy sauce), the recommended Sogogi Jowl 소고기 깻잎쌈 (Char-grilled beef jowl) and Samgyupsal 삼겹살 (Char-grilled pork belly with scallion salad).

Crackling (해물과자) – $9.90

Sogogi Jowl (소고기 깻잎쌈) – $10.90

Samgyupsal (삼겹살) – $10.90

I guess our favourite picks got to be the Sogogi Jowl (you have to wrap the meat and enjoy it in one bite!) and Samgyupsal salad (it was very refreshing!).

For the mains, we went for Ssam 보쌈 and Dak Galbi 닭갈비 빠에야 (Spicy chicken paella). The Ssam is a kind of pork dish, where you wrap the tender pork ribs with lettuce in the bun and savour it. Though this dish is for 2 persons’ share, it’s considered a little pricey at $40.90.

The Dak Galbi on the other hand, was served hot and the taste is a little unique, though not quite to our liking. The serving is pretty big though, enough for 2-3 persons’ share. We personally preferred the Tapas over the main dishes.

Dak Galbi (닭갈비 빠에야) – $38.90

We tried the Misugaru 미숫가루 and Hotteok 호떡 for the desserts. The Misugaru lava cake was served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, strawberries and lime compote. It tasted quite good, but we preferred the lava cakes over at SYNC Korean Fusion Bistro. The Hotteok (chewy sweet Korean pancake) came with banana foster, which is a tasty combination overall.
